the cost of replaceable blades today, shaving with a straight razor
makes perfect sense. Actually, in the long run, you will save money

The first modern straight razor complete with decorated handles and hollow ground blades was constructed in Sheffield, in England, the center of the cutlery industry, in the 18th century. The English produced the first superior hard steel grade in 1740.
The French soon joined the movement producing a highly polished steel, also known as Sheffield silver steel, famous for its deep gloss finish, is considered a superior quality steel and is still used to this day in France by such manufacturers as Thiers Issard.
Daily shaving was not a widespread practice in the 19th century so some men never shaved. Straight razors were the most common form of shaving before the 20th century and remained that way in many countries until the 1950s. The custom of shaving every day among American men is a 20th century innovation.
Straight razors eventually fell out of fashion after the 50's because of the emergence of safety razors in 1901. This new type of razors did not require any serious knowledge to use. The blades were extremely, hard to sharpen, and were meant to be thrown away after one use, and rusted quickly if not discarded.
Around 1960, stainless steel blades which could be used more than once became available, reducing the cost of safety-razor shaving.
Who knows if men are just fed up with paying through the nose for a bit of cheap steel set in plastic that gets thrown away after a few days or if the desire to be macho is rearing its head once more? Let's face it, if scraping off your stubble with three inches of unguarded, sharp steel isn't macho, I don't know what is!
Whatever the reason, there's no doubt that more and more men are now using straight razors for their everyday shave and loving it !
